(Guided meditation is a practice where teacher borrow his/her mind to students so that learning becomes natural. At the same time, students keep their mind aside doing the journey. It may appear similar to any instructional learning, however, the difference is huge. The meditation is a discovery of the subjective reality. It is self that is known by the self, not by the mind. The masters say that it is a state of knowing where knower is absent. Every master followed the same principles of eastern wisdom but personalized the practices based on the temperament of individual or group. The series explores the teachings of three masters who lived 2500 years ago. The teachings includes many active steps like breathing, mantra recitation, focus on different subtle centers inside the body and mudras. )

Is mind the brain in action? What it means

The concept in neuroscience says that the bran alters itself, every time we learn something new. According to neuroscience, the mind is brain in action. What it really means? Is mind the product of the brain? Then brain is also the seat of awareness or an instrument.

It is interesting that leading neurologist claims , ‘As a neurologist, I contend that consciousness is nothing more than the ability of our brain to acquire information (which is the state of being awake) …………………… My contention is that the brain can do all that, and, therefore, a functioning brain is identical to a conscious mind. ’

Eastern wisdom says mind is an internal instrument different from the brain

According to eastern wisdom, mind is an instrument of consciousness or self. In one school of thought, it has four functions – thinking mind, intellect, and ego and mind stuff. If we do not accept this concept, mindfulness or meditation cannot exit. Every meditation is a state of being or consciousness that transcends the mind.

Awakening in meditation or mindfulness is to displace mind as doer

Even if we agree that mind is brain in action, then who is the thinker that chooses, organizes, plans, acts in me differently in different time, space and events.

I like or love you.

I hate you.

The above statements are made by the brain or brain in action. Does it make any sense? As if brain in action becomes the knower and actor. It is like car starts by itself so it is the brain in action. The mechanistic model may not work with meditation or mindfulness.

Subjective vs objective reality: eastern wisdom vs science

Eastern wisdom aims at discovery of the subjective reality. Am I the brain? Am I the brain in action? If yes, then what it means. Is the brain the knower in me or something else?

Eastern wisdom clearly states that self is evolved mind or the state of being. Science and eastern wisdom both aims at discovery of truth. However, eastern wisdom aims at subjective reality and science aims at objective reality. Both are right but manuals of both are different.

More than 3000 masters in the 6000 years tradition of eastern wisdom, every master came to the same conclusion that the mind is the cause of suffering and solution. That the mind is an instrument of higher consciousness. That the mind can be transcended. That the awakening is the discovery of the ‘knower’ behind the mind.

Emptiness or nothingness –

The emptiness or nothingness if it exists, then who knows it. If one knows it then emptiness is different from the knower. The meditation state cannot be explained by the mind, because the higher self cannot become the object of the mind. Therefore masters explained the state differently. The emptiness experienced is different from the experiencer. To know the experiencer is meditation or mindfulness.

Diversity is the unique strength of eastern wisdom- it helps every one aspiring peace

Every master followed the same fundamentals. For example, the four noble truths taught by Buddha had been taught my masters thousands of years ago. It is one of the important principles that helps students to learn from their experiences

Heya – suffering

Hetu- cause of suffering

Han- absence of suffering

Hanopaya – ways to end suffering

The Heya, Hetu, Han and Hanopaya are four Sanskrit words that convey the same meaning as explained by Buddha.

In this program, we follow the teachings of Upanishads and Buddha together. Because it helps students learn from their experiences. After interactive talk on the principles, the guided practice is given. First three steps remain the same in a weekly session. Many other steps are added depending upon the group and their challenges of life.

Every session is dynamic and full of life because the practice is different.
