APPLIED MINDFULNESS/ MEDITATION-13: HOW ‘BRAIN IN ACTION’ (MIND) CAN ‘FIRE THE BRAIN TO REWIRE IT.’: MEDITATION DOES IT THROUGH THE MIND

(Applied Mindfulness / Meditation from eastern wisdom aims at discovery of our true nature. The true nature is behind and above, what is known and experienced by the mind. When is known or can be known to the mind is the objective reality. The mindfulness discovers what is not known to the mind i.e. the subjective reality or our true nature. The objective reality is eastern wisdom is known as ‘non-self’. And meditation is a discovery of ‘real-self’. However, science can definitely help understand the changes in the ‘non-self’ i.e. body, breath, brain, mind etc. How science can ever know, when it rejects the very presence of ‘self’ as consciousness. The series explores the journey of Applied Mindfulness / Meditation based on the teachings of more than 3000 masters and their teachings in a 6000 years old tradition)

Science says, ‘fire the brain to rewire it’ but……falls short of…..

Neuroscientists suggest that, inward moving mind in mindfulness, fires the brain to rewire it. When science says – mind is brain in action. What it means that ‘The brain in action, fires the brain to rewires it.  I don’t know if makes sense or common sense. However, there is no doubt about the brain is constantly changing.

Mind is a bridge between matter and consciousness.

According to eastern wisdom, the matter and consciousness (or self) are the two corners of the existence and mind acts as a bridge between the two. The mind swings in between the constantly changing matter (body, breath, mind, ego etc.) and unchanging self (state of being). That may be one reason why mind is wandering all the time.

Mind is the cause of all problems and suffering

According to eastern wisdom, we are essentially of the nature of peace, happiness, wisdom, truth and love. But the mind desires love and happiness from the others. The mind starts running outside in the world on people, places and possessions for peace and happiness. We forget our essential nature. This forgetfulness is ignorance i.e. incomplete knowledge about the real-self, causes sufferings.

The mind is the cause of peace and happiness

When we make a choice to allow the scattered mind to move inside. It drops its identification with objects, people and places. The mind becomes transparent, that reflects our true nature i.e. peace, love and happiness.

It is like we are looking in the mirror that is veiled by dust. We cannot see our image clearly. Because we know why, we remove the dust. Similarly the dust in the mind are the impressions of people, places and possessions. It is the mind that claims peace and happiness in others, causes bondage.

Why we meditate – mind changes the brain — fire the brain to rewire it…

According to many masters of eastern wisdom, there are three bodies – gross or the physical (brain is the part), the subtle body or the mind, intellect, ego and mind stuff together and the causal body or the cause of the physical and subtle bodies.

It is the mind when it leaves the external world, moves inside and lives in the heightened state of awareness and attention, brings about the change in the brain.

Manuals are different but goal is the discovery of the truth

The eastern wisdom is not untouchable that science cannot take the principals as hypothesis. After all, science is studying mindfulness or meditation. Why not take the principles of eastern wisdom.

Eastern wisdom and science both aim at the discovery of truth. The big difference is that manuals of science are meant for the discovery of the objective reality and of eastern wisdom are meant for the discovery of subjective reality.

The manuals are different, therefore, approach should also be different. Science needs to create new research protocol to study the subjective reality that we discover in mindfulness or meditation. Only then the confusion of ‘brain in action’ (or mind according science), fires the brain to rewire it, will be removed.
