APPLIED MINDFULNESS / MEDITATION-2: AWAKENING TO THE SELF ( WITNESS COSNCIOUSNESS) , THAT NEVER CHANGES LEADS TO PEACE AND HAPPINESS(Applied Mindfulness / Meditation from eastern wisdom aims at discovery of our true nature. The true nature is behind, above and deep behind what is known and experienced by the mind e.g. body, brain, breath, mind, emotions, intellect and ego. When we try to find meditation or mindfulness in what is known to the mind, we impose principles of science that does not know the ‘soul ‘of meditation/mindfulness. However, science can definitely help understand the changes in the ‘non-self’ i.e. body, breath, brain, mind etc. How science can ever know, when it rejects the very presence of ‘self’ as consciousness. According to the eastern wisdom, mind is the middle term, between matter and consciousness. For example, life is like a river with two banks- one bank is the consciousness and other is matter. Neither matter nor consciousness has any problems. The mind is the bridge between matter and consciousness.
Stress and suffering are due to the mind –
The attributes of matter is change and of consciousness is permanence. Mind confuses itself interacting between the two. For example, mind first says, ‘I am the body’, then it works on the body to make it immortal. The immortality and freedom belongs to consciousness or real-self. Mind craves for immortality of the body that can never be possible. The result is impurities of the mind, causes stress and suffering.
All meditation / mindfulness practices aims at removing the ignorance. Science works in the field of matter and material world. The eastern wisdom says this material world is ‘different’ from the ‘real-self’. The eastern wisdom further clarifies that our ‘true nature’ is highest state of consciousness and body, mind, intellect are all its instruments.
No doubt science can work in the field of body, mind, emotions, brain, intellect etc. which are ‘other’ for the ‘real-self’.
No meditation/ mindfulness is possible, until mind recognizes the difference between the ‘self’ and ‘non-self’ in the journey. Paying attention non –judgmentally is the beginning of recognizing that the mind can change. But it cannot lead to the state of mindfulness.
